Childline

Childline is a free, confidential helpline and online service that supports children and young people in distress, danger, or facing abuse. Founded in 1986 in the UK by Dame Esther Rantzen, it operates 24/7 via phone, webchat, and email, ensuring that no child has to cope alone. Staffed by trained counsellors, Childline offers a safe space to talk about issues such as bullying, family problems, mental health struggles, neglect, sexual abuse, and exploitation. George Michael was a key early supporter, and donated the royalties from his song Jesus to a Child to help keep the service running, quietly funding it for years without publicising his generosity during his lifetime. His contributions helped ensure that countless children had somewhere to turn in their darkest moments.

Beyond immediate crisis support, Childline empowers young people by offering practical advice, emotional guidance, and information about their rights. It gives children control over what they share and the pace of the conversation, fostering trust and safety. When necessary, counsellors can connect them with further professional help or emergency services. By combining compassion with action—and strengthened by the generosity of figures like George, Childline has become a trusted lifeline, guiding children toward safety, recovery, and hope.

Samaritans

Samaritans is a free, confidential listening service dedicated to supporting anyone in emotional distress, struggling to cope, or feeling suicidal. Founded in 1953 in the UK by the Reverend Chad Varah, it operates 24/7 via phone, email, and online chat, with volunteers ready to listen without judgment or pressure. The service is built on the belief that the simple act of being heard can be life-saving, offering a safe space for people to express their feelings openly, whether they’re facing loneliness, relationship breakdowns, mental health challenges, or overwhelming life pressures.

Samaritans’ volunteers are trained to provide empathetic, non-directive listening—focusing on understanding rather than giving advice. This approach helps people feel acknowledged, reduces isolation, and can give them the clarity or emotional space to find a way forward. While they don’t diagnose or offer therapy, Samaritans connect individuals to the strength and hope they might not see in the moment. By being available at any hour, for anyone, about anything, they help prevent crises from escalating and work to reduce the stigma around talking about mental health and suicide.
